All About ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ Starring The Weeknd, Jenna Ortega, and Barry Keoghan

Nevermind The Idol, Abel Tesfaye, aka The Weeknd’s foray into acting continues. His latest project, Hurry Up Tomorrow, marks his feature film debut as an actor. And like The Idol, Tesfaye is teaming up with some pretty big names for the thriller film loosely based on his own experiences.
Hurry Up Tomorrow follows the release of The Weeknd’s sixth studio album of the same name. The film will feature several songs from the album, a conclusion to a musical trilogy that includes After Hours and Dawn FM. In 2023, Tesfaye hinted to W that Hurry Up Tomorrow would be his final album under his stage name, saying it’s “probably my last hurrah as The Weeknd. This is something that I have to do. As The Weeknd, I’ve said everything I can say.”
On Tuesday, April 1, The Weeknd surprised crowds at CinemaCon in Las Vegas by performing two new songs from the film and album, “Cry for Me” and “Open Hearts,” as well as his classic hit “Blinding Lights.” Earlier this year, Tesfaye told Variety, “The film actually inspired the album [of the same name]. It offered me a chance to express a lot that I needed to release, with cinema serving as the ideal medium for exploration. The openness of film allowed me to delve into these themes freely.”
While introducing the trailer on stage at CinemaCon, Ortega added, “It feels more like an experience, and when you go into it with that mentality, it makes sense.”
Here, everything to know about Hurry Up Tomorrow.
Who is in the cast of Hurry Up Tomorrow?
The Weeknd is joined by Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan in Hurry Up Tomorrow. The project is The Weeknd’s first feature film acting role aside from playing himself in the Safdie brothers’ Uncut Gems in 2019.
Trey Edwards Shults (It Comes at Night and Waves) directed the film from a script written by himself, Reza Fahim, and The Weeknd.
What is the plot of Hurry Up Tomorrow?
The Weeknd leads Hurry Up Tomorrow as a version of himself, which an official synopsis describes as “a musician plagued by insomnia [who] gets pulled into an odyssey with a stranger [Ortega] who begins to unravel the very core of his existence.”
“It's about an artist, you could say, on the verge of a mental breakdown,” Shults said. “He meets this woman, and they go on this odyssey together. It's a mix of psychological thriller and drama. I honestly feel like I've never seen a movie quite like it.”
Is there a trailer for Hurry Up Tomorrow
There are two official trailers for the film so far. The first was released on February 4 and introduces the fraught relationships between The Weeknd's character, his love interest Anima (Ortega), and his manager, Lee (played by The Weeknd’s real-life friend, Barry Keoghan).
The film’s second trailer was released on April 2, 2025. It opens with Amina (Ortega) pouring gasoline over a home, and ends with her holding up a lighter to The Weeknd’s crying face, as he’s gagged and held hostage. “You’re hurting yourself, and you’re hurting everyone around you. Something has to change,” she tells him. The rest of the clip shows a paranoid Weeknd spiraling out of control with drugs and alcohol while on tour, with Lee trying to get him back on track. It all seems like a metaphor for the journey The Weeknd has taken over the course of his artistic project, which is now ending. Watch below:
