Consider tonight the starting line for the race toward March’s Oscars. The 31st annual Critics Choice Awards kicked off at the Barker Hangar in Los Angeles with host Chelsea Handler returning for the fourth consecutive year. It was a big night for One Battle After Another, which walked away with Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson. Sinners and Frankenstein tied with four awards each, including a win for Jacob Elordi’s portrayl of The Creature. In the other acting categories, Amy Madigan won for her Internet-loved role as Aunt Gladys in Weapons. And Jessie Buckley and Timothée Chalamet took home prizes for their turns in Hamnet and Marty Supreme, respectively. The ceremony also recognized achievements in television, with fan-favorite series Adolescence, The Pitt, and All Her Fault racking up multiple wins across the night’s top categories.
But before the critics weighed in, Hollywood A-listers hit the red carpet dressed to the nines. With nominees including Ariana Grande, Emma Stone, Elle Fanning, and Teyana Taylor, the night doubled as an early runway for awards season style. The red carpet not only delivered on high-wattage glamour, but also in the vintage department. Multiple stars opted for archival looks, including Kylie Jenner, who supported Chalamet in vintage Versace, and Fanning, who dazzled in archival Ralph Lauren. Grande’s custom Alberta Ferretti look even channeled Diahann Carroll’s 1969 Oscars dress.
