Maisie Williams Method Dresses as Sandra Bullock for the Practical Magic 2 Press Tour
Practical Magic 2 is all about nostalgia, so it only makes sense that the stars embrace ’90s references when promoting the film on the red carpet. During the European premiere for the witchy sequel, franchise newcomer Maisie Williams paid homage to original cast member Sandra Bullock, who plays Williams’s mom in the film. The 29-year-old dressed in a look modeled after one Bullock wore back in 1999.
Williams arrived at the Practical Magic 2 premiere on August 26 in a custom ensemble created by British designer Ellie Misner. The deep red dress featured a sleeveless, corseted top with a boatneck bodice and a satin skirt that knotted around her waist before ending in a train behind her.
The dress is a nod to a very ’90s two-piece Bullock wore to the premiere of Forces of Nature back in 1999 with a boatneck, midriff-bearing tee and similar satin wrap skirt. Despite the reference, Williams (and stylist Dino Bonačić) made sure the look felt otherwise current. Instead of completing it with a multilayered pink choker à la the original, Williams opted for a stunning rubellite Bulgari high jewelry necklace, which picked up the red color.
Now, it may seem odd that Williams opted to reference an outift from the opening of a rom-com co-starring Ben Affleck, as opposed to the original Practical Magic, which came out only a year prior. But given the blood-adjacent color scheme of the outfit, it feels like an appropriate choice for Williams and the film.
But Williams wasn’t done referencing Bullock. The next day, the young actor pulled out another look inspired by her costar. On Thursday, the film’s four stars (rounded out by Nicole Kidman, Joey King) returned for another photo op. This time, Williams snatched a dress right from her witch mom’s closet.
Williams attended a photocall for the sequel in a black dress Bullock wore two decades ago to the Infamous premiere. Featuring asymmetric straps and a gathered skirt, Williams once again made it her own with accessories, piling on brooches and necklaces, and finishing it off with a mini chain coin purse that hung off her hand on the red carpet.
With many more stops planned on the Practical Magic 2 press tour, we can expect Williams to pull out more Bullock references for the upcoming premieres. So while she’s shopping in her movie mommy’s closet, may we suggest Bullock’s white, tiered Oscar de la Renta from the 2004 Oscars or the raspberry ruched Alberta Ferretti she wore to the Met in 2007?
